15 Priceless Persian Rugs – One Very Expensive Accident
A customer’s collection of 15 Persian rugs were affected by an ingress of water. They were being stored in a basement spare room and were rolled up whilst repair works were being carried out in other sections of the house.
When the client discovered the ingress water soaking her rugs she tried to lift a number of rugs and spread them across furniture in an attempt to dry them out.
The water had damaged the rugs in many ways. The ingress had caused some of the darker dyes to bleed into lighter areas and the dampness had resulted in mould spores starting to form.
The Cleaning Process
The rugs were collected from site brought back to the rug spa to be dried and treated with an antimicrobial to prevent further deterioration. We were then able to assess the rugs and provide a quotation to fully restore all 15 rugs. We were also asked to obtain valuations of each rug, for the Insurance Company, which we were able to do. Once costings had been agreed we carried out the following work:
All rugs were thoroughly immersive cleaned and a specialist mal-odour counteract was used to deal with the still lingering odour issue. Five of the rugs had to be blocked back perfectly into shape. This is a process that involves moistening the rug and using a power stretcher and large staples it is gradually stretched back into shape and stapled to the floor and then speedily dried. Four of the rugs had suffered colour runs (mainly reds into white). To correct this is a painstaking process using specialist colour removal products and a lot of patience. The other three rugs were suffering only from mal-odour which was relatively simply dealt with using appropriate products.

“I am so grateful to you for all the wonderful work that you have carried out. The collection belongs to my father who is working abroad and he would have been heart broken if he was aware of the damage to his treasured collection. Now thanks to you, he need never know”
